Securolytics Web Security detects attempted communication by PCKeeper software and related toolbars.  We thought it would be useful to provide a description of how PCKeeper works to illustrate how Securolytics Web Security protects our customers from having “Potentially Unwanted Programs” like PCKeeper introduced into their systems.

What is PCKeeper

PCKeeper is a program that claims to provide system optimization and security protection by scanning for junk files and duplicate registry entries. It can be downloaded directly from the PCKeeper website or bundled into the installation of programs such as download managers, PDF creators and video streaming software.

How does it work?

PCKeeper adds a registry entry for the current user which will allow the program to automatically start each time it is rebooted and adds a Windows Service which is designed to run continuously in the background. Users are prompted to run system scans for problems such as Windows installation errors junk files and bad registry entries. The severity of most of these problems is exaggerated. Problems found by PCKeeper can only be fixed if a license is purchased at a cost of up to $40. It should be noted that there are many legitimate programs that provide these functions and will fix legitimate problems for free.

PCKeeper is also known to do the following on computers where it is installed:

– Adds browser toolbars that slowdown system performance

– Installs additional adware programs

– Modifies search engine settings that display inaccurate results

– Redirects browser to various sites that can result in malware infection

– Compiles user’s personal data which may be communicated to cyber scammers
