What Is DDoS?
DDoS is short for Distributed Denial of Service. This type of cyberattack compromises an online service by overwhelming your server through multiple sources. Basically your server is hit with so much incoming data that it freezes and closes down. This form of attack has been around for awhile, but certain events in 2016 illustrate just how serious these threats can be.
Krebs DDoS Attack
In September 2016, IT security journalist Brian Krebs experienced a severe DDoS attack. Hours after he published a detailed article about vDos, a DDoS service widely thought to be active in cybercrime, his site was hit so hard, his free anti-DDoS provider Akamai had to forfeit its service, leaving him defenseless.
Just a month after the Krebs incident, Dyn suffered a DDoS attack which crippled sites such as Reddit, PayPal and Spotify, by using security cameras, webcams, DVRs, baby monitors, and other devices with internet connectivity.
What’s new and frightening about the attack on Dyn wasn’t just the magnitude and aggressiveness of the attack, but the fact that it can be traced to home gadgets, routers, webcams, and other IoT devices. These attacks showed us that many IoT devices are just too easy to obtain and manipulate. They are also rarely protected thus making them difficult to monitor and control..
DDoS Attacks In 2017
Many predict that in 2017, 500,000 IoT devices will be compromised by a DDoS attack. This is a huge amount and foreshadows the inability of organizations to keep IoT devices safe from such attacks. The idea that an attack can shut down, say a website just like Krebs’ site, just because people disagree with what it is reporting is quite disheartening but what makes DDoS a more serious matter is how easy it is for an attacker to compromise IoT devices and cost businesses real financial hardship.
